The Michigan State Medical Society, working with patient advocates in a coalition called Health Can’t Wait, backs a bill in Lansing to reform health insurers’ prior authorization practices. The legislation also targets so-called step therapy, in which insurers require patients to undergo an alternative treatment or try a lower-cost drug and “fail first” before covering the physicians’ preferred option.
Health Can’t Wait is a coalition of patients, health care providers, and patient-support groups working together to put Michigan patients first by ending dangerous delays in patients’ access to health care caused by insurance company bureaucracy, including prior authorization red tape and step therapy requirements.
